The hobby of historical re-enactment has become very popular in the UK, USA and Europe, with groups re-enacting many periods from the Romans right through to the Gulf War. Alongside the re-creation of warfare there has grown up an interest in the everyday lives of our ancestors, what they wore and ate, their beliefs and thoughts, the study of what was and wasn’t socially acceptable and the resurrection of traditional crafts such as spinning, weaving, dyeing and baking. This process of bringing history to life has proven to be extremely popular with the general public and of great benefit in the understanding of history and archaeology. Re-enactment has stirred up an interest in history among thousands of people who previously had little or none. It takes history out of the purely academic realm and makes it accessible to people from all sections of society. Classed as “edutainment”, it is a hobby that both educates and entertains. It addition it has proven to be a family orientated hobby with an enjoyable social side to it. Escaping the 21st Century with its stresses and strains and return to a simpler time when people sat around camp fires singing and discussing the latest news. The group has plenty of spare kit so that anyone interested in ‘trying out’ this hobby can do so without having to spend money on clothing and equipment. Once someone decides to join the ranks, they are encouraged to purchase their own kit.
