Text Box: War of 1812 July 2010 US Uniforms

Recreating the role of the Irish in the American Civil War 1861-65

Below is information on ideas as to how we can create a reasonably authentic portrayal of a US soldier from the War of 1812, regular, militia and artillery using kit and equipment that we already have, with the addition of minor bits and pieces.

Left: US Regular 9th Infantry Regiment

The regular army was small and poorly supplied. Scott’s regiments that invaded Canada wore grey militia roundabouts these were almost identical to Richmond Depot II jackets.

Shako: Belgic shako with US plate added cord altered to hang diagonally.

Jacket: Richmond depot II

Belts: Black ACW or white Napoleonic

Belt plate: Plain brass

Overalls: white or grey

Gaiters: grey or black

Footwear: ACW brogans or 18th century shoes

Other items such as British canteens can also be used.

Officers and Sergeants added swords and red sashes. The US blue regimental flag used during the war was identical to the ACW flag differing only in the number of stars.

Left: US Militia

The majority of US troops were made up of part-time militia soldiers.

Headware: Civilian hat

Jacket: Hunting shirt or civilian

Belts: Black ACW or white Napoleonic

Belt plate: Plain brass

Overalls: white or civilian

Gaiters: grey or black

Footwear: ACW brogans or 18th century shoes

Other items such as British canteens can also be used.

Officers and Sergeants added swords and red sashes.

Left: US Artillery

Much of the US artillery was dressed in Royal artillery uniforms captured from British supply ships by American privateers.

We can use RA uniforms, replacing the shako with forage caps or portray Militia artillery as left.
